Meet A live in Carer

My name is Rose and I have been a Live-in carer for the past seven years. My job is very varied not only from client to client but also on a daily basis.

General duties include personal care, helping to shower and dress, preparing meals throughout the day, light house work such as cleaning, washing and ironing. My role is also that of a companion as sometimes we go out shopping or visiting within the local community.

Each client brings with them different qualities and diversities. One lady I lived with had dementia, which meant that I could be a stable and consistent person in her, life working with her and her extended family as her needs changed. In this case the lady’s condition deteriorated such that her mobility declined and another carer would come in at intervals during the day to help with hoisting so that she was able to stay at home as were her wishes.

I have also looked after a gentleman that suffered a head injury. He required a lot of support and I worked with him to overcome the disabilities caused by the injury, assisting with physiotherapy, every day tasks and helping him to access a rewarding social life. This included events such as bowling, trips to London and going to the Theatre.

There are different types of Live-in scenarios; mainly full Live-in where I stay permanently and my breaks are given by either family members or other domiciliary carers that work for the agency. The other option is a two week on and two off option, swapping over with another Live-in carer. I prefer the full live-in option as I feel I am able to get to know and understand the individual much better that way.

I never feel alone in this role as I am in constant contact with the office and if I do have any concerns my Supervisor will always come out to see me.

I thoroughly enjoy my life as a Live-in carer, I feel secure and fulfilled.
